How to Write an Effective Statement of Need

This helpful grant-writing article came our way via GuideStar, a nonprofit organization committed to gathering and disseminating information about every IRS-registered nonprofit in the United States.

In a program proposal, a statement of need presents data to build a “compelling case for support.” Cindy Adams, the CEO of GrantStation and author of this post on GuideStar’s blog, presents four basic questions that you should consider when you write a statement of need. Cindy recommends posting these questions in your work area to stay focused.

  1. What is the problem that requires a solution?
  2. What will happen if this problem is not addressed?
  3. What is the gap between what exists now and what ought to be?
