Cost Effectiveness Analysis: An Introduction

This link is an online excerpt from the book “Priorities in Health” (Jamison DT, et al., editors. , Washington (DC): World Bank; 2006.). In this chapter, the authors present a detailed overview of cost effectiveness analysis: why it is useful, what it is, its reliability, policy, tasks, and more.

If you work for a health department, your department probably has a cost-effectiveness specialist who analyzes information like this about your programs and public health strategies. If you work for a community based organization, you might be aware of cost-effectiveness from a budget position or, you might not be aware of it at all. Increasing your knowledge of cost-effectiveness and developing the skills to conduct in-house analysis will help you communicate with your funders and increase your awareness of program impact.
